SUMMARY:Register now: Free Public Talk on Neurodiversity and Research
DESCRIPTION:April marks Autism Acceptance Month\, an important opportunity to move beyond awareness and focus on meaningful inclusion.   \nAs understanding of neurodiversity grows\, so too does recognition of the need for research that better reflects and supports neurodivergent communities. Yet despite increasing attention\, neurodivergent people remain under-represented in many areas of mental health research.  \nJoin us for a special podcast-style panel conversation featuring 3 expert brain and mental health researchers who will explore two complementary perspectives.   \nThe discussion will consider how neurodivergent participants can be more effectively included within broader mental and brain health research\, as well as the importance of designing research projects specifically tailored for neurodivergent communities from the outset.  \nTogether\, we will reflect on the opportunities\, challenges and responsibilities involved in building more inclusive research practices. How can we design studies that are accessible\, respectful and responsive? What does genuine inclusion look like in practice?  \nSpeakers:  \n\nProfessor Clare Mackay is a Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Oxford whose research uses neuroimaging to understand risk for psychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions\, alongside leading translational work through the Oxford Centre for Human Brain Activity and the NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (OH BRC). More recently\, she has developed a significant academic and advocacy focus on body‑focused repetitive behaviours\, including trichotillomania\, working to improve understanding\, reduce stigma and develop better interventions for this under‑served community. \n\n\nDr Eri Ichijo is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Oxford University Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging . Her research aims to improve our understanding of pain experience in the autistic population. She is particularly interested in exploring the relationship between the cognitive modulation of pain and individual differences. \n\n\nDr Alice Quinton is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Oxford’s Department of Experimental Psychology. Her research focuses on interventions for anxiety-related mental imagery (or “flashforwards”) with a particular interest in the experiences of neurodivergent young adults. \n\nQuestions will be put to the speakers by event host Andreia Costa\, Project Manager for Training & Career Development at OH BRC and Chair of the Neurodiversity & Disability Working Group at University of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry. Andreia is an advocate for the neurodivergent community and hosts the Neurodiverse Voices Connect Podcast.   \n  \nThere are 100 spaces available in the Lecture Theatre\, which will be allocated on a first come basis. \nPlease use this public talk registration form to sign up for a place. \n  \nCoffee is available in the common room from 5:30pm and the event will start promptly at 6:00pm. \nAny questions email: Sophie.Ray@oxfordhealth.nhs.uk

SUMMARY:Reaching Beyond the Usual: Inclusive Approaches to Recruitment and Retention
DESCRIPTION:Details \nAs part of our three-part webinar series Reaching Beyond the Usual: Inclusive Approaches to Recruitment and Retention\, we’re delighted to invite you to a live\, interactive online session on practical tools to plan and deliver inclusive health research. \nTitle: How well do you really know your target population? \nSpeaker \nCherish Boxall\, founder of Engage Intelligently\, draws on behavioural science and 14 years of experience setting up and delivering clinical trials and securing competitive research funding\, including two NIHR fellowships. She specialises in turning evidence on inclusion and participant behaviour into practical strategies that work. Expect real-world examples\, actionable tools\, and time throughout the session for your questions. \nWhat to expect\nIn health research\, understanding your target population is critical. This online training session will show you how to: \n\nUnderstand the concept of intersectionality\nRecognise how multiple characteristics intersect to create unique experiences and potential barriers for research participants\nApply segmentation principles to define and reach key population groups\nIdentify various segmentation variables relevant to research (e.g.\, demographic\, geographic\, psychographic\, behavioural)\nTranslate these insights into practical recruitment and retention strategies.\n\nWho is this for\nResearch and staff affiliated with Barts\, Birmingham\, Cambridge\, Moorfields\, Oxford\, and Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centres who want to strengthen inclusive recruitment and retention.

SUMMARY:Oxford Biomedical Research Centre EDI Lunch & Learn - Equality Impact Assessment and Inclusive Research Design
DESCRIPTION:Stephanie Perrin\, Equality\, Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the Agile Initiative\, will be talking about Equality Impact Assessment and Inclusive Research Design. The session will be online. \nAn Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) is a way to identify the possible impacts of a research project or decision. Researchers can use this tool to understand the effects of their work on trial participants or members of the research team\, based on their protected characteristics\, and mitigate potential negative impacts and promote positive ones. \nCompleting an EIA helps ensure that research processes are fair and do not present barriers to participation. It is a great way for researchers to embed equality\, diversity and inclusion through all stages of their projects\, be it research design\, engagement or participant selection. \nIn this talk\, Stephanie will explain why EIAs are important\, how to use them and how you can apply them to your research to demonstrate how you have considered inclusion. There will be an opportunity to ask questions. \nFind out more and register.

SUMMARY:The Past is Not Past: Incorporating Historical Context into Psychological Therapy with People from Minoritised Ethnicities
DESCRIPTION:Historical context is a key factor in psychological therapy with people from minoritised ethnicities. The ongoing effects of historical experiences of discrimination and self-empowerment continue to shape the lived experiences of people from minority ethnic communities and influence their interactions with psychological therapy and healthcare systems in general today. However\, historical context remains underexplored in the academic mental health literature. \nThis webinar will explore why and how historical context should be incorporated into psychological therapy with people from minoritised ethnicities. It will have a focus on cognitive behavioural therapy and will\, in addition to a theoretical conceptualisation\, suggest practical steps attendees can take to include historical context in their work. The histories of minority ethnic communities are also relevant in healthcare services in general\, so there will be some discussion of how these historical legacies might be addressed across the healthcare system. \nMore information and registration.
