SUMMARY:NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub Lunchtime Seminar: Survival analysis techniques in clinical trials – from traditional methods to multi-state Markov modelling approaches
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Health BRC colleagues are welcome to join this lunchtime seminar\, organised by the NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub. \nThe seminar is part of a series. Each seminar is 20 minutes long followed by 10 minutes of Q&A\, and will be held via Microsoft Teams. \nSurvival analysis techniques in clinical trials – from traditional methods to multi-state Markov modelling approaches \nDr Clement Twumasi\, NDM Medical Statistician \nWednesday 5th March 2025\, 1:00-1:30pm \nThis talk explores the evolution of survival analysis techniques in clinical trials\, highlighting their crucial role in medical research. We will start with traditional methods like Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox proportional hazards models\, foundational tools for analysing time-to-event data. The discussion will then advance to contemporary approaches\, focusing on time-homogeneous and inhomogeneous multi-state Markov models. These models offer a nuanced view of patient trajectories through different health states\, providing deeper insights into disease progression and treatment efficacy. Attendees will gain a good understanding of both conventional and cutting-edge techniques for time-to-event analysis\, enhancing their ability to design and interpret them in clinical trials \nNo registration is required. \nClick here to join the session.

SUMMARY:Essentials of Research Sponsorship
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nThis course is designed to provide the essentials to become and/or improve the management of clinical research as a sponsor.  A one day course that will provide an opportunity to develop skills and gain knowledge in the underlying principles of sponsorship. The course covers widely accepted concepts that not only directly apply to sponsorship but are transferable to other areas of the research industry. \nThe course is not a replication of Good Clinical Practice\, a deep dive into regulatory compliance or a “how to” guide to being a sponsor\, but is designed to support organisations in developing tools to become effect and efficient sponsors in the research landscape. \nContent Covers: Sponsor Oversight\, Financing\, Risk Assessments\, Quality Management Systems and Transparency \nWho is the Course for? \nThe course is designed for anyone working in research sponsorship from non-commercial organisations or even small companies wishing to develop their own sponsorship portfolio.  If your organisation is new to research sponsorship or would like to build on your current processes this course will provide the information to support that development.

SUMMARY:In Conversation at Christmas 2024 (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Alzheimer’s Research UK invite you to join them this festive season as they look back at the big dementia research news stories of 2024. \nSpeakers:  Prof Vanessa Raymont and Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Alzheimer’s Research UK David Thomas \nThis year saw the launch of revolutionary studies that bring us closer than ever to simple blood tests to diagnose dementia. A historic breakthrough in Alzheimer’s treatment was achieved this year\, with a new drug approved for use. While it’s not yet available on the NHS\, it marks a significant step forward. And the Lancet Commission delivered crucial insights into preventing and reducing the risk of dementia this year. \nJoining ARUK to reflect back on this and more are Prof Vanessa Raymont and David Thomas. Together\, we will explore the progress that has been made this year and what it means for people affected by dementia. \nRegister to attend:Registration (eventsair.com)

SUMMARY:Global Megatrends\, Mental Health\, and Human Behaviour
DESCRIPTION:Mental disorders\, including depression and anxiety\, rank among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that global megatrends\, defined as major and long-lasting changes in societal\, environmental\, and geopolitical landscapes\, can exacerbate the risk of mental ill health. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Omid V. Ebrahimi discusses how global megatrends and critical incidents\, such as infectious disease outbreaks and economic recessions\, impact the onset of mental disorders and can alter human behaviour during moments when societal cohesion is most crucial. Drawing on his research into the COVID-19 pandemic\, this discussion aims to deepen our understanding of how large-scale societal phenomena interact with individual psychological outcomes\, and how insights from past crises can inform strategies for future preparedness and resilience.
