SUMMARY:In Conversation at Christmas 2024 (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Alzheimer’s Research UK invite you to join them this festive season as they look back at the big dementia research news stories of 2024. \nSpeakers:  Prof Vanessa Raymont and Head of Policy and Public Affairs at Alzheimer’s Research UK David Thomas \nThis year saw the launch of revolutionary studies that bring us closer than ever to simple blood tests to diagnose dementia. A historic breakthrough in Alzheimer’s treatment was achieved this year\, with a new drug approved for use. While it’s not yet available on the NHS\, it marks a significant step forward. And the Lancet Commission delivered crucial insights into preventing and reducing the risk of dementia this year. \nJoining ARUK to reflect back on this and more are Prof Vanessa Raymont and David Thomas. Together\, we will explore the progress that has been made this year and what it means for people affected by dementia. \nRegister to attend:Registration (eventsair.com)

SUMMARY:Applied Methods of Cost-Effectiveness Analysis (online)
DESCRIPTION:This is an intensive week-long course for health economists and health professionals\, with some knowledge of health economics\, who wish to learn about the methodology of cost-effectiveness analysis as applied in health care. \nAnalytic methods of economic evaluation are applied in health care to address the fundamental economic question of how to allocate scarce health care resources to maximise health gain. This course teaches the latest methods for performing a cost-effectiveness analysis of a healthcare intervention. \nThe course is designed for those who need to perform cost-effectiveness analysis in healthcare and those who need to understand in some depth the issues that health economists face when performing these analyses\, hence\, researchers and decision makers from public\, commercial and academic organizations concerned with healthcare resource allocation. \nEarly bird deadline – Noon on Friday 18 October 2024 \nFind all information about this course and others: HERC Online and Classroom Courses 2024/2025 — Health Economics Research Centre (HERC) (ox.ac.uk)

SUMMARY:Global Megatrends\, Mental Health\, and Human Behaviour
DESCRIPTION:Mental disorders\, including depression and anxiety\, rank among the leading causes of disability worldwide. Emerging evidence suggests that global megatrends\, defined as major and long-lasting changes in societal\, environmental\, and geopolitical landscapes\, can exacerbate the risk of mental ill health. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Omid V. Ebrahimi discusses how global megatrends and critical incidents\, such as infectious disease outbreaks and economic recessions\, impact the onset of mental disorders and can alter human behaviour during moments when societal cohesion is most crucial. Drawing on his research into the COVID-19 pandemic\, this discussion aims to deepen our understanding of how large-scale societal phenomena interact with individual psychological outcomes\, and how insights from past crises can inform strategies for future preparedness and resilience.

SUMMARY:NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub Lunchtime Seminar: Trial designs for early phase trials
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Health BRC colleagues are welcome to join this lunchtime seminar\, organised by the NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub. \nThe seminar is part of a series. Each seminar is 20 minutes long followed by 10 minutes of Q&A\, and will be held via Microsoft Teams. \nTrial designs for early phase trials \nAlexander Ooms\, OCTRU Senior Statistician \nWednesday 6th November 2024\, 1:00-1:30pm \nEarly phase clinical trials are critical for assessing the safety\, dosage\, and preliminary efficacy of new treatments. This seminar will outline some available designs in Phase I and Phase II settings. \nPhase I trials primarily focus on determining safe dosages and identifying side effects using broad categories of ‘rule-based’ or ‘model-based’ dose escalation methods. \nPhase II trials typically aim to give an early indication of treatment efficacy and further assess safety via single-arm or randomised controlled trials. Adaptive\, occasionally Bayesian\, designs are popular in the early phase setting and some examples of adaptive designs will be discussed. \nNo registration is required. \nClick here to join the session.
