SUMMARY:Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum Autumn Science Lecture: Fruit development\, morphology and evolution driven by a hormonal and genetic pas de deux
DESCRIPTION:The Autumn Science Lecture series invites distinguished academics to deliver lectures on plant sciences and related areas of research. These lectures are online and are free for all to attend. \nHow do molecular signalling mechanisms evolve to affect plant development? Join Professor Lars Østergaard\, the new Sherardian Professor of Botany at the University of Oxford\, as he presents his studies on comparative reproductive tissue development in both crops and non-cultivated plant species. Specifically\, his lab group aims to unravel mechanisms of hormonal and genetic interactions responsible for morphological and reproductive diversity. \nThis lecture is online\, you will receive joining details after you register here.

SUMMARY:New Course: Online Inequality in health and health care: theoretical and empirical considerations
DESCRIPTION:This short online course will cover theoretical concepts on inequity and inequality in health as well as its measurement. It will also provide an overview of selected available (longitudinal) household survey data and cohort studies that combine socio-economic and demographic variables along with various health measures – these datasets provide good sources for empirical inequality in health research. Overall\, the course will combine theory and applied methods using case studies\, real-word evidence\, and data analysis using Stata. \nFor researchers and analysts interested in the measurement of socio-economic inequality in health\, including (but not limited to): Ph.D. students\, post-doctoral researchers and third sector organisations. \nThis is an entry and intermediate-level course so no strong a-priory knowledge in economics or inequalities research is assumed.  \nThe course is divided into 3 main modules:-  \nModule 1: Inequality in health and the concept of health poverty (Prof Guido Erreygers) \nModule 2: Avoidable/unavoidable health inequality (Assistant Professor Apostolos Davillas) \nModule 3: Measuring health inequality in practice (Prof Philip Clarke) \nModules will be delivered live\, synchronously using online platforms with the lecturer to go over both theoretical issues and practical exercises as well as provide several opportunities for questions. \nAccess to the online course materials\, exercises\, and other supporting documents will be provided two weeks in advance of the live sessions. \nThe language of the course is English. \nA certificate of participation will be provided (electronically) post-course \nCourse fees\, registration and payment information along with all course details can be found on the HERC web page.

SUMMARY:Oxford Botanic Garden and Arboretum Autumn Science Lecture: Prescribing Nature
DESCRIPTION:The Autumn Science Lecture series invites distinguished academics to deliver lectures on plant sciences and related areas of research. These lectures are online and are free for all to attend. \nKatherine Willis CBE is Professor of Biodiversity at the University of Oxford and is Principal of St Edmund Hall. She is also a crossbench peer in the House of Lords. Her research falls into two categories. First\, she aims to understand how plant biodiversity responds\, over time and space\, from years to millions of years and from local to global scales\, to climate change and other environmental drivers. Second\, she researches the flow and extent of critical ecosystem services that we obtain from plant biodiversity\, such as the drawdown of atmospheric CO2\, flood risk protection\, clean water\, soil erosion protection\, and important spaces for enhancing physical and mental wellbeing. \nThis talk will focus on her latest research into quantifying the health and wellbeing benefits humans get from spending time in nature. \nThis lecture is online\, you will receive joining details after you register here.

SUMMARY:Oxford Academic Paper Writing Retreat for Nurses and AHPs
DESCRIPTION:18\, 19 and 20 October 2023 \nThis three-day Academic Paper Writing Retreat is sponsored by the Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)\, Oxford cognitive health Clinical Research Facility (CRF)\, and the Oxford Institute for Nursing\, Midwifery and Allied Health Research (OxInAHR). \nIt is open to all nurses and AHPs at any career stage\, working at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust\, OxInAHR or Oxford Brookes University who have a paper to write up for submission to an academic journal and need time and space to focus on this without interruption. \nWe ask that delegates who attend commit to the full three days (£50 deposit required to a secure place\, refundable after attending all 3 days)\, and that you come with a clear writing goal and a specific material outcome that you wish to achieve. It is an expectation that all attendees will have submitted their chosen paper(s) to an academic journal within eight weeks of the retreat. \nThe event will take place across Headington Hill Hall and Marston Road site Headington Campus\, Oxford Brookes University\, where attendees will join a community of writers in a supportive shared space. \nThere will be an opportunity to meet with a pre-assigned mentor during and after the retreat\, and attend tutorials on day one and two\, led by a professional creative writer from the Royal Literary Fund. \nClick here to complete the application form for the October 2023 retreat. Get in touch via writingretreat@psych.ox.ac.uk with any questions. \nApply by midday Friday 15 Sept 2023 \n\nProtected academic paper writing time\nNetwork with fellow researchers\n1-2-1 mentor support\nTutorials\n\nWriters from the retreat in May 2023 share their experiences. \n“Structured time for writing without feelings of guilt for not doing other (non-research related) tasks. This gave me the space needed to focus entirely on writing the paper.” \n“It can be quite lonely undertaking a project as a nurse that doesn’t quite ‘fit’ the usual routes into research so to meet colleagues and AHPs was valuable.” \n“I thought it was very carefully prepared to gives us the best experience possible. A valuable gift”

SUMMARY:Workshop: Multiple Long-Term Conditions Cross NIHR Collaboration (MLTC NIHR CNC) Methodologies
DESCRIPTION:Research into Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC) is a strategic priority for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). A Multiple Long-Term Conditions Cross-NIHR Collaboration (MLTC CNC) has recently being established to bring together the NIHR’s translational\, applied and policy research infrastructure to respond to the NIHR Strategic Framework for MLTC Research. The aim is to work together to tackle the MLTC research questions that could not be achieved without cross-disciplinary collaborative endeavour. This new collaboration is being led by Professor Kamlesh Khunti and Professor Avan Sayer\, and will be inclusive of all parts of NIHR to maximise the use of existing resources\, leverage additional funding\, attract commercial and non-commercial partners and collaborators\, and build research capability\, capacity and leadership in MLTC research. \nThe methodologies workstream will be hosting an event that will bring together a small group of experts\, including Early Career Researchers from across the NIHR infrastructure to identify the key challenges and potential solutions around methodologies to treat\, prevent and manage the consequences of MLTC. \nIf you are interested in attending the event please email through an expression of interest to eleanor.lockhart@newcastle.ac.uk by 4th August.
