SUMMARY:Introduction to epidemiology
DESCRIPTION:This introductory course in epidemiology is intended for those who have little or no prior epidemiological training\, but have moved into a student or staff role that requires an understanding of these epidemiological principles for their work. \nThe course will take you from the basic principles of epidemiology\, to the design\, interpretation\, and appraisal of epidemiological research. No prior knowledge is required\, although a background in biological sciences or medicine may help understand the topics in health. \nThis course will cover \n\nfundamental principles in epidemiology (including measures of disease occurrence and association)\nbias and confounding\nstatistics (chance\, power\, meta-analysis)\ndifferent types of epidemiological study designs (descriptive\, case-control\, cohort\, randomised control trials).\n\nIt will also apply these principles in a critical appraisal of a research paper\, along with a week-long group project on a study design exercise of a current question in the field. \nThe first four days of this five day online course consist of approximately two live sessions\, followed by one hour of self-directed learning in the form of exercises\, readings or pre-recorded videos. SUMMARY:Workshop: Multiple Long-Term Conditions Cross NIHR Collaboration (MLTC NIHR CNC) Methodologies
DESCRIPTION:Research into Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC) is a strategic priority for the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). A Multiple Long-Term Conditions Cross-NIHR Collaboration (MLTC CNC) has recently being established to bring together the NIHR’s translational\, applied and policy research infrastructure to respond to the NIHR Strategic Framework for MLTC Research. The aim is to work together to tackle the MLTC research questions that could not be achieved without cross-disciplinary collaborative endeavour. This new collaboration is being led by Professor Kamlesh Khunti and Professor Avan Sayer\, and will be inclusive of all parts of NIHR to maximise the use of existing resources\, leverage additional funding\, attract commercial and non-commercial partners and collaborators\, and build research capability\, capacity and leadership in MLTC research. \nThe methodologies workstream will be hosting an event that will bring together a small group of experts\, including Early Career Researchers from across the NIHR infrastructure to identify the key challenges and potential solutions around methodologies to treat\, prevent and manage the consequences of MLTC. \nIf you are interested in attending the event please email through an expression of interest to eleanor.lockhart@newcastle.ac.uk by 4th August.

DESCRIPTION:This three-day Academic Paper Writing Retreat is sponsored by the Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)\, Oxford cognitive health Clinical Research Facility (CRF)\, and the Oxford Institute for Nursing\, Midwifery and Allied Health Research (OXINMAHR). \nIt is open to all nurse\, AHP and healthcare researchers at any career stage\, working at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust\, OXINMAHR or Oxford Brookes University who have a paper to write up for submission to an academic journal and need time and space to focus on this without interruption. \nWe ask that delegates who attend commit to the full three days (£50 deposit required to a secure place*)\, and that you come with a clear writing goal and a specific material outcome that you wish to achieve. It is an expectation that all attendees will have submitted their chosen paper(s) to an academic journal within eight weeks of the retreat. \nThe event will take place in the JHB Building Headington Campus\, Oxford Brookes University\, where attendees will join a community of writers in a supportive shared space. Prior knowledge of epidemiological measures of association such as prevalence\, odds\, risks\, rates and their ratios is required. DESCRIPTION:From doctoral to postdoctoral research: a workshop for nurses\, midwives\, allied health professionals and their managers \nNurses\, midwives and allied health professionals (NMAHPs) with doctorates often find themselves back in full-time clinical practice following their degree with no dedicated time for research. This free event provides advice and help for NMAHPs and their managers on managing the transition from doctoral to post-doctoral research. \nPresentations will be delivered in-person from Southampton.
