SUMMARY:Local Capacity and Capability for Research
DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \nA one-day course designed to provide an understanding of the requirements of an NHS organisation when determining whether to take part in a particular research study as a host. It explains the principles of good study set up\, the information required by the R&D office and where it can be obtained. It introduces delegates to the various systems and documents associated with research and also provides some guidance on developing relationships with key support departments and stakeholders within an NHS organisation. \nCourse Structure \nThe first half of the day concentrates on making delegates familiar with process. The second half is spent putting everything into practice working through an example study. The course is a mixture of traditional trainer presentation with interactive activities and discussions. \nWho is the Course for? \nAll staff working in R&D offices\, who are responsible for assessing\, arranging and confirming local capacity and capability when taking part in research \nSponsors of health research\, particularly those from outside the NHS\, who will get a better insight into the requirements of NHS R&D to ensure that their study and documentation facilitate the process \nResearchers designing studies that will involve the NHS\, particularly those new to NHS research and/or from outside the NHS\, who can get a better insight into the requirements of NHS R&D and ensure that their study and documentation facilitate the process.

SUMMARY:The Value of Nursing in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Join Professor Dawn Dowding as she delivers the annual RCN Winifred Raphael Memorial Lecture on nursing in a digital age. \nDigital ways of working have become routine for many parts of our lives\, including in health and care environments. In this increasingly technological environment it is crucial that nurses have an understanding of how digital solutions can support nursing practice and care. This lecture will explore the role of digital technologies in nursing practice. It will consider how nursing can adapt to an increasingly digital environment\, drawing on existing research evidence\, and highlighting where we need to develop our knowledge and understanding to meet the demands of a digital future. \nThis event is in person and open to all. Doors open at 4pm and the lecture will begin at 4.30pm. The lecture will be followed by light refreshments from 6-6.30pm. \nFor any queries about this event please contact: \nRCN Library and Heritage Centre \nrcn.library@rcn.org.uk \n0345 337 3368

SUMMARY:Embracing the complexity of Personality Disorder: the scientific and clinical contribution of Transference Focused Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:The objective of the seminar is to describe how Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is well placed to address Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)\, based on the evidence base for treatment\, developments in affective neuroscience and the ICD-11 guidelines for the diagnosis of PD. \nAfter presenting the key tenets of TFP\, a clinical vignette will be used to illustrate the above points. We will also present emerging results from a mixed method study of the teaching of Applied TFP for general psychiatry settings in 5 countries\, and discuss the systemic implications of this for the improvement of management of BPD within a world psychiatry context. \nMore information and registration.

SUMMARY:Peer Coaching for Career Development (PeCo)
DESCRIPTION:Applications close Monday 7 April 2025 at 9am \nPeCo is a peer coaching programme  designed to support early career researchers who have completed a PhD to develop coaching skills and insights for their own career development. The programme is led by a professional coach with many years’ experience working with academic researchers. \nMany researchers face similar sorts of challenges in their roles – for example\, repeated fixed-term contracts\, access to senior support\, and time management. PeCo brings together a group of peers at a similar stage\, enabling you to uncover insights relating to navigating issues which you often share with others. Previous participants have found that the programme has helped them build their skills in ways that have helped in management and supervisory elements of their roles.    \nPeCo is deliberately kept at a smaller size to aid discussions and connection\, and to enable greater support from the programme facilitators.  \nParticipants will learn and practice coaching skills in a group setting – helpful for progressing career goals and building your network in mental health research. \nPeCo 2025 consists of 8 sessions from May 2025 to January 2026: \n\nThursday 22 May 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 19 June 2025\, 10am-3pm in person coaching skills workshop (Birmingham)\nThursday 10 July 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 4 September 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 16 October 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nTuesday 4 November 2025\, 10am-3pm in person MHR Incubator Gathering with alumni from GROW and PeCo (Manchester)\nThursday 11 December 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 8 January 2026\, 9.30am-11am online\n\n6 sessions will be hosted online\, and 2 sessions will be face-to-face. Travel costs for in-person sessions will be reimbursed.\nAll participants must commit to attending each of the programme sessions. Please do not apply if you cannot commit to attending every session.

SUMMARY:Inspiring others with a clear vision
DESCRIPTION:Inspiring others with a clear vision is a critical leadership skill. It provides teams with a shared sense of purpose which can drive motivation to deliver on both short and longer term goals. Led by leadership experts\, Cappfinity\, this 1-hour webinar outlines how inspired teams emerge when colleagues resonate with the strategic direction\, find their tasks achievable and share a collective responsibility for creating a meaningful impact.  \nTo inspire others\, leaders need a vision for the future that signals clarity\, direction and is emotionally resonant. By attending this webinar you will: \n• understand how to harness inspiration in others at work \n• consider the problem a vision can overcome through ‘construal level theory’ \n• be clear on the definition of a vision  \n• be guided through the ingredients of creating a compelling vision \nThis webinar is open to anyone working in or supporting health and care research via NIHR\, NHS\, UK universities and other publicly funded organisations. \nFind out more online.

SUMMARY:NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub Lunchtime Seminar: Survival analysis techniques in clinical trials – from traditional methods to multi-state Markov modelling approaches
DESCRIPTION:Oxford Health BRC colleagues are welcome to join this lunchtime seminar\, organised by the NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub. \nThe seminar is part of a series. Each seminar is 20 minutes long followed by 10 minutes of Q&A\, and will be held via Microsoft Teams. \nSurvival analysis techniques in clinical trials – from traditional methods to multi-state Markov modelling approaches \nDr Clement Twumasi\, NDM Medical Statistician \nWednesday 5th March 2025\, 1:00-1:30pm \nThis talk explores the evolution of survival analysis techniques in clinical trials\, highlighting their crucial role in medical research. We will start with traditional methods like Kaplan-Meier estimates and Cox proportional hazards models\, foundational tools for analysing time-to-event data. The discussion will then advance to contemporary approaches\, focusing on time-homogeneous and inhomogeneous multi-state Markov models. These models offer a nuanced view of patient trajectories through different health states\, providing deeper insights into disease progression and treatment efficacy. Attendees will gain a good understanding of both conventional and cutting-edge techniques for time-to-event analysis\, enhancing their ability to design and interpret them in clinical trials \nNo registration is required. \nClick here to join the session.
