SUMMARY:Strategic commissioning of mental health services in England: perspectives from local stakeholders

SUMMARY:Peer Coaching for Career Development (PeCo)
DESCRIPTION:Applications close Monday 7 April 2025 at 9am \nPeCo is a peer coaching programme  designed to support early career researchers who have completed a PhD to develop coaching skills and insights for their own career development. The programme is led by a professional coach with many years’ experience working with academic researchers. \nMany researchers face similar sorts of challenges in their roles – for example\, repeated fixed-term contracts\, access to senior support\, and time management. PeCo brings together a group of peers at a similar stage\, enabling you to uncover insights relating to navigating issues which you often share with others. Previous participants have found that the programme has helped them build their skills in ways that have helped in management and supervisory elements of their roles.    \nPeCo is deliberately kept at a smaller size to aid discussions and connection\, and to enable greater support from the programme facilitators.  \nParticipants will learn and practice coaching skills in a group setting – helpful for progressing career goals and building your network in mental health research. \nPeCo 2025 consists of 8 sessions from May 2025 to January 2026: \n\nThursday 22 May 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 19 June 2025\, 10am-3pm in person coaching skills workshop (Birmingham)\nThursday 10 July 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 4 September 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 16 October 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nTuesday 4 November 2025\, 10am-3pm in person MHR Incubator Gathering with alumni from GROW and PeCo (Manchester)\nThursday 11 December 2025\, 9.30am-11am online\nThursday 8 January 2026\, 9.30am-11am online\n\n6 sessions will be hosted online\, and 2 sessions will be face-to-face. Travel costs for in-person sessions will be reimbursed.\nAll participants must commit to attending each of the programme sessions. Please do not apply if you cannot commit to attending every session.

SUMMARY:Pioneering Approaches in Experimental and Translational Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Two-day\, in-person course \nThursday 13 March (10:00 – 17:30) and Friday 14 March (9:30 – 16:30) 2025 \n  \nBook your place – priority booking for NIHR Maudsley BRC\, King’s and South London and Maudsley until 29 January 2025 \n  \nThere is an urgent need for new interventions for psychiatric and neurological conditions. Experimental medicine studies and early-phase trials are important in providing mechanistic information\, optimising and de-risking therapeutic development before proceeding to later stage clinical trials. \n  \nThis two-day\, in-person course aims to inspire and prepare researchers embarking on careers in translational and experimental medicine approaches to psychiatric and neurological conditions. \n  \nIt is hosted by the Experimental Medicine and Novel Therapeutics Theme of the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre. \n  \nAbout the course\nThe course will introduce pioneering approaches across research methods\, including neuroimaging\, psychopharmacology\, digital therapeutics\, sleep\, neuromodulation and machine learning/AI\, whilst covering a range of practical essentials – from how to ensure that your study design is feasible\, incorporate participant and patient perspectives\, embed reproducibility and open science\, and foster industry partnerships. DESCRIPTION:In mental health science\, there has been frustratingly slow process in understanding and developing new treatments for anxiety\, depression and psychosis\, as well as in predicting which treatments will work for whom and in what contexts. \nSupported by Wellcome\, the Global Alliance for Living Evidence on aNxiety\, depressiOn and pSychosis (GALENOS) tackles the challenges of mental health science research by cataloguing and evaluating the full spectrum of relevant scientific research including both human and preclinical studies. \nGALENOS will also allow the international mental health community—including patients\, carers\, clinicians\, researchers\, policy makers\, industry and funders—to better identify the research questions that most urgently need to be answered. SUMMARY:New Therapeutic Approaches in Translational Mental Health - Academia Meets Industry - Grand Challenges and New Horizons
DESCRIPTION:The New Therapeutic Approaches in Translational Mental Health conference will bring together industry\, academic and clinical researchers\, the regulator and government research funding organisations to discuss the current challenges facing therapeutic development.  The conference aims to explore\, initiate and strengthen collaborations between industry and academia and will include local researchers from Oxford as well as researchers from the UK’s national clinical research infrastructure. \nHosted by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (OH BRC) and sponsored by the UK Mental Health Mission\, the day will bring together researchers\, clinicians\, industry partners\, charities and research funders for a day of networking\, discussion and ideas exchange. The conference will showcase the breadth of expertise in the OH BRC and discuss the unmet need for innovative new technologies and therapies in mental ill health\, key challenges and the potential solutions that can arise from partnerships between industry and researchers in Oxford and nationally. \nKey areas of focus include; Experimental Medicine for drug development\, Non-drug-based interventions and technology\, Omics & Data and Clinical trials. Key challenges from the perspective of industry and academia will be explored by building the academic/industry conversation on how new approaches to academia/industry partnerships may be used to ‘de-risk’ therapeutic development. \nThe content of the conference programme is driven by a committee of scientists and clinicians from the OH BRC with input from industry experts. The conference will be delivered in-person on 16th September 2024 in Oxford and will consist of a series of lightning talks\, industry led workshop sessions and a roundtable discussion. DESCRIPTION:The public are invited to a webinar to ask questions of a leading specialist about the latest research into anxiety. \nProfessor Thalia Eley will take questions in a live ‘ask the expert’ event hosted by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). \nIt takes place online on Wednesday 5 June from 7pm to 8pm (GMT). \nThalia is Professor of Developmental Behavioural Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry\, Psychology and Neuroscience\, King’s College London\, and co-lead of the Genetic Links to Anxiety and Depression (GLAD) Study. \nShe also runs the EDIT lab\, a group of researchers focusing on what factors may influence why people respond differently to life’s experiences. Specifically\, she is interested in exploring which psychological treatments work best for different individuals and whether their genetics may play a part in how people respond. \nGuests must sign up in advance using the event registration form\, where they can enter their question for the expert. DESCRIPTION:Ketamine 2024 is a forum for top researchers and experienced and interested clinicians to learn from each other about the therapeutic use of ketamine and related compounds for affective disorders. \nThis highly anticipated event\, due to take place in Oxford this year has been organised by Dr Rupert McShane\, consultant Psychiatrist at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and University of Oxford Department of Psychiatry\, alongside his colleague Dr Sara Costi\, Wellcome Trust Doctoral Fellow\, and Univeristy of Oxford Department of Psychiatry\, \nSessions will range widely.
