SUMMARY:How to engage with Parliament as a researcher (Health)
DESCRIPTION:UK Parliament hosts events open to researchers from any discipline and career-level\, and delivers training across the UK. \nTheir new series of online training sessions provide an opportunity to hear directly from a Member of the House of Lords on how they engage with academic research. \nDuring a Parliament for Researchers with the House of Lords session\, attendees will find out about how research evidence is used in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords\, and how to work with Parliament as a researcher. \nThe next Parliament for Researchers event is on 22 October with Baroness Young of Old Scone who will share insights on the value of academic research in Parliament\, informed by her background in health services. \nDuring the session\, you will find out about how research evidence is used in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and how you can work with Parliament as a researcher. \nThese sessions are suitable for early career researchers\, PhD students\, researchers who are new to engaging with the UK Parliament as well as those who would benefit from a refresher. \nRegister to attend online:Microsoft Virtual Events Powered by Teams

SUMMARY:The 695th Lord Mayor's Lectures: Innovation In Mental Health & The GALENOS Project: How To Look Back To Move Forward
DESCRIPTION:In mental health science\, there has been frustratingly slow process in understanding and developing new treatments for anxiety\, depression and psychosis\, as well as in predicting which treatments will work for whom and in what contexts. \nSupported by Wellcome\, the Global Alliance for Living Evidence on aNxiety\, depressiOn and pSychosis (GALENOS) tackles the challenges of mental health science research by cataloguing and evaluating the full spectrum of relevant scientific research including both human and preclinical studies. \nGALENOS will also allow the international mental health community—including patients\, carers\, clinicians\, researchers\, policy makers\, industry and funders—to better identify the research questions that most urgently need to be answered. The ultimate aim of GALENOS is to improve patients’ outcomes in real world settings\, by fostering innovation and accelerating growth in mental healthcare in the UK and globally. \nAs Director of Global Alliance for Living Evidence in Anxiety\, Depression and Psychosis (GALENOS)\, Prof Andrea Cipriani presents the lecture. \nPlease register to attend online here.

SUMMARY:New Therapeutic Approaches in Translational Mental Health - Academia Meets Industry - Grand Challenges and New Horizons
DESCRIPTION:The New Therapeutic Approaches in Translational Mental Health conference will bring together industry\, academic and clinical researchers\, the regulator and government research funding organisations to discuss the current challenges facing therapeutic development.  The conference aims to explore\, initiate and strengthen collaborations between industry and academia and will include local researchers from Oxford as well as researchers from the UK’s national clinical research infrastructure. \nHosted by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (OH BRC) and sponsored by the UK Mental Health Mission\, the day will bring together researchers\, clinicians\, industry partners\, charities and research funders for a day of networking\, discussion and ideas exchange. The conference will showcase the breadth of expertise in the OH BRC and discuss the unmet need for innovative new technologies and therapies in mental ill health\, key challenges and the potential solutions that can arise from partnerships between industry and researchers in Oxford and nationally. \nKey areas of focus include; Experimental Medicine for drug development\, Non-drug-based interventions and technology\, Omics & Data and Clinical trials. Key challenges from the perspective of industry and academia will be explored by building the academic/industry conversation on how new approaches to academia/industry partnerships may be used to ‘de-risk’ therapeutic development. \nThe content of the conference programme is driven by a committee of scientists and clinicians from the OH BRC with input from industry experts. The conference will be delivered in-person on 16th September 2024 in Oxford and will consist of a series of lightning talks\, industry led workshop sessions and a roundtable discussion. A preliminary conference programme is provided below. \nAs well as the academic science\, this conference will also offer a unique opportunity to discuss the development of translational clinical infrastructure exploring challenges in clinical development\, clinical trial set-up & patient recruitment and new related technologies that will help solve the R&D challenges in psychiatry and brain health. \nRegistrations will be through the university’s Online Shop.  Please contact Betina Nair for further information. \n

This will comprise: \n\na new state-of-the-art mental health hospital\, offering the best treatment\, care\, and therapeutic environment.\na modern scientific facility for the world-leading brain research taking place at the University of Oxford\, with additional space for biotech\, pharmaceutical and start-up companies.\na new post-graduate college for the University of Oxford focused on medical sciences\, bio-engineering and related disciplines.\n\nThis consultation aims to gather valuable insights and feedback\, on the proposed redevelopment of the Warneford Hospital site. DESCRIPTION:The public are invited to a webinar to ask questions of a leading specialist about the latest research into anxiety. \nProfessor Thalia Eley will take questions in a live ‘ask the expert’ event hosted by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). \nIt takes place online on Wednesday 5 June from 7pm to 8pm (GMT). \nThalia is Professor of Developmental Behavioural Genetics at the Institute of Psychiatry\, Psychology and Neuroscience\, King’s College London\, and co-lead of the Genetic Links to Anxiety and Depression (GLAD) Study. \nShe also runs the EDIT lab\, a group of researchers focusing on what factors may influence why people respond differently to life’s experiences. Specifically\, she is interested in exploring which psychological treatments work best for different individuals and whether their genetics may play a part in how people respond. \nGuests must sign up in advance using the event registration form\, where they can enter their question for the expert. DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the launch of the NIHR LGBTQ+ Staff Network. The NIHR LGBTQ+ Staff Network is open to all staff working as part of NIHR (such as staff in coordinating centres\, LCRN core teams\, delivery staff in LCRN partner organisations and staff in NIHR infrastructure eg. ARCs and BRCs) who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community or as allies. The focus of the Network has been shaped by many of the 120 people who responded to the expression of interest which went out last year and will include peer support and wellbeing; social and community activities; development and training; LGBTQ+ research inclusion and communications and engagement. \nThe launch meeting for the Network will be held virtually on 7 February from 11am to 12pm\, where the process will start to put together the Coordinating Committee\, share key information about the Network and allow members opportunities to connect with each other. \nIf you are interested in joining the mailing list for the NIHR LGBTQ+ Staff Network and would like to be invited to attend the launch meeting on 7 February and future meetings\, please complete this short form.
