SUMMARY:Masterclass: Clinical Trials and Health Systems Data
DESCRIPTION:Clinical trials are essential for evaluating new treatments\, and there is growing interest in harnessing health systems data (HSD) to enhance their efficiency and effectiveness. HSD can offer researchers and trialists valuable opportunities to streamline key processes such as identifying eligible participants\, monitoring trial progress in real time\, enabling remote follow-up and capturing outcomes. Yet\, its use also presents challenges\, as researchers must navigate complex regulatory and legal frameworks that can hinder broader adoption. \nAim: In this masterclass series\, we aim to explore how HSD can advance clinical research\, with a particular focus on decentralized and large simple trials. SUMMARY:FREE Public Talk – Can electrodes in the brain treat chronic pain?
DESCRIPTION:Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has become a recognised way of tackling tremors in people with Parkinson’s disease. Now this technique – delivering an electrical pulse into the brain – is being explored as a potential treatment for other neurological conditions. \nA new study is looking at whether DBS can help to treat chronic pain in people who have suffered a stroke. Central post-stroke pain is a disabling – and currently untreatable – condition which affects areas of the brain and central nervous system that process pain signals. \nIn this public talk\, Alex Green\, Professor of Neurosurgery\, and Ben Seymour\, Professor of Clinical Neuroscience\, will discuss the EPIONE study\, which is investigating whether DBS could be used to treat CPSP\, and discuss whether DBS might be a way of tackling other brain-related conditions.\nThe EPIONE study (Effective Pain Interventions with Neural Engineering) is supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Oxford and Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centres (BRC)\, who are jointly organising this talk. \nFREE entry\, no booking required. \nRefreshments from 5.40pm\, for a 6pm start. \n

SUMMARY:Hidden in plain sight – retinal imaging data for AI-driven early detection of systemic diseases and augmentation of drug discovery
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Dr Wen Hwa Lee – CEO \nCompany: Foresight Research Ltd. \nDescription:  Recent advances in ophthalmology have shown that retinal images can detect much more than ocular disorders. Retinal imaging can identify early signs of systemic diseases like Alzheimer’s\, Parkinson’s\, diabetes\, and cardiovascular (heart) conditions\, often years before traditional symptoms appear. This emerging field\, known as Oculomics\, shows the eye’s potential as a window into overall health. \nCharity-owned Foresight Research Ltd. aims to collect community-level\, pre-disease data from hundreds-of-thousands participants\, through a UK-wide network of optical practices. Through collaborations with national health research initiatives\, they plan to build comprehensive datasets from early-stage and healthy participants – and make these accessible for industry and academic researchers working on healthcare innovation (biomedical\, AI\, health economics\, etc.). DESCRIPTION:April marks Autism Acceptance Month\, an important opportunity to move beyond awareness and focus on meaningful inclusion.   \nAs understanding of neurodiversity grows\, so too does recognition of the need for research that better reflects and supports neurodivergent communities. Yet despite increasing attention\, neurodivergent people remain under-represented in many areas of mental health research.  \nJoin us for a special podcast-style panel conversation featuring 3 expert brain and mental health researchers who will explore two complementary perspectives.   \nThe discussion will consider how neurodivergent participants can be more effectively included within broader mental and brain health research\, as well as the importance of designing research projects specifically tailored for neurodivergent communities from the outset.  \nTogether\, we will reflect on the opportunities\, challenges and responsibilities involved in building more inclusive research practices. How can we design studies that are accessible\, respectful and responsive? What does genuine inclusion look like in practice?  \nSpeakers:  \n\nProfessor Clare Mackay is a Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Oxford whose research uses neuroimaging to understand risk for psychiatric and neurodegenerative conditions\, alongside leading translational work through the Oxford Centre for Human Brain Activity and the NIHR Oxford Health Biomedical Research Centre (OH BRC). More recently\, she has developed a significant academic and advocacy focus on body‑focused repetitive behaviours\, including trichotillomania\, working to improve understanding\, reduce stigma and develop better interventions for this under‑served community. \n\n\nDr Eri Ichijo is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Oxford University Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging . Her research aims to improve our understanding of pain experience in the autistic population. SUMMARY:Does the shingles vaccine prevent dementia? Evidence from 6.3 million people in England
DESCRIPTION:Following an influential study in Wales\, they examined whether eligibility for the live herpes zoster vaccine reduces dementia risk in England using a regression discontinuity design based on the 2013 UK rollout. An analysis of over 6.3 million individuals using Hospital Episode Statistics data confirmed that vaccine eligibility significantly reduced hospital-coded herpes zoster\, validating the study design. However\, there was no evidence of a corresponding reduction in hospital-coded dementia\, with results remaining null across multiple sensitivity analyses. Additional checks found no substantial bias or confounding that could explain the discrepancy with earlier studies suggesting protective effects\, and possible reasons for the discrepancy will be discussed. Overall\, the findings suggest that while the vaccine effectively reduces zoster incidence\, any impact on dementia risk in England is likely small or absent.   \nPlease note: This is intended for University of Oxford staff and students only \nMore information and booking.

The final deadline for registration is 29th May. \nRegister here for the NIHR Statistics Group Conference 2026 \nWe are excited to host a series of fantastic talks and presentations focused on our conference theme this year\, Statistical integrity in health and care research. Our keynote speakers this year are Dr Puja Mehta\, Prof Olivia Wu and Dr Jack Wilkinson. In addition to the excellent line up of posters and rapid fire talks\, the breakout sessions will feature a diversity of topics focused on best practice in areas that include patient and public involvement (PPI) in digital data collection\, multiple imputation\, artificial intelligence in research\, core statistical competencies for postgraduates\, tools to assess RCT trustworthiness\, designing diagnostic medical device trials\, mixed methods research practices\, qPCR experimental design\, methods and analysis in surgical trials\, and much more. \nThe conference will be held in partial hybrid format with bespoke technical support offered by Multicord Events team that will allow us to stream the breakout sessions\, keynotes and rapid-fire talks held in the main conference room only. \nThe provisional programme is available here; please note that this is still subject to change. \nAll are welcome to attend – it will be of relevance to statisticians\, data scientists and those with an active interest in statistics and data science. \nThe main conference will start from 1pm with lunch on Thursday 18th June 2026. \nThe NIHR Statistics Career Development Group are hosting an Early Career Morning on the morning of 18th June from 10:00 to 13:00 prior to the main conference. This will be an opportunity for early career statisticians\, data scientists\, and others interested in quantitative methods\, to find out more about the NIHR Statistics Group and how to make the most of the conference. As well as a brief introduction to the Group\, there will be a series of short talks from invited speakers\, and an exercise to get to know the other attendees. \nA unique feature of the NIHR Statistics Group conference is to provide a forum for applied statisticians to discuss ideas and challenges they encounter\, and much of this discussion takes place within the breakout sessions. Those of you who attended the 2024 conference may remember the breakout session on the MRC-funded International Statistics and Epidemiology Partnership\, which aims to create a fully African-led network of early-mid career applied medical statisticians by 2028. The partnership has just released its first annual newsletter. We are delighted to hear that the partnership is making good progress in achieving its aims; this is exactly the kind of initiative we are keen to support with the conference\, bringing together statisticians to support best practice and encourage networking. \nOne of the break-out sessions to be held at this year’s annual conference will focus on legacy and hand-over and is of particular relevance to anyone who has participated in the Ophthalmology Section or who might like to be going forwards.  If there are any statisticians who have a particular interest in taking over the leadership of this group\, please do attend; if interested but unable to attend the session\, please email catey.bunce@lshtm.ac.uk. \nThe call for poster abstracts is now closed. DESCRIPTION:The NIHR BRC: Oxford is holding a free online public talk on Tuesday 21 July at 2pm \nMany women experience high blood pressure during pregnancy\, and it is increasingly recognised as an early warning sign for health problems later in life. Conditions such as gestational hypertension and preeclampsia are known to increase a woman’s longer-term risk of stroke\, heart disease and dementia. Yet most women receive little follow-up once their baby is born. \nRecent studies by University of Oxford researchers have shown that\, by monitoring and carefully managing their blood pressure after giving birth\, new mothers could cut their risk of future heart disease and strokes – and protect their long‑term brain health. \nThe studies\, supported by the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre: Oxford\, have led to the creation of a postpartum cardiac risk clinic in the Oxford Heart Centre. \nThis talk will explore how pregnancy is a window into future health\, giving an opportunity to improve long-term care and help prevent future cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline in women. However\, they present new challenges for evaluation\, implementation and commercialisation\, with decisions often needing to be made before conventional evidence is fully established. \nThis workshop will explore how early health technology assessment (HTA)\, economic evaluation and commercial considerations can be integrated to support the successful translation of digital health innovations into clinical practice.
