SUMMARY:NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub Lunchtime Seminar: Trial designs for early phase trials
DESCRIPTION:BRC: Oxford Health colleagues are welcome to join this lunchtime seminar\, organised by the NIHR Oxford BRC Statistics Hub. \nThe seminar is part of a series. Each seminar is 20 minutes long followed by 10 minutes of Q&A\, and will be held via Microsoft Teams. \nTrial designs for early phase trials \nAlexander Ooms\, OCTRU Senior Statistician \nWednesday 6th November 2024\, 1:00-1:30pm \nEarly phase clinical trials are critical for assessing the safety\, dosage\, and preliminary efficacy of new treatments. This seminar will outline some available designs in Phase I and Phase II settings. \nPhase I trials primarily focus on determining safe dosages and identifying side effects using broad categories of ‘rule-based’ or ‘model-based’ dose escalation methods. \nPhase II trials typically aim to give an early indication of treatment efficacy and further assess safety via single-arm or randomised controlled trials. Adaptive\, occasionally Bayesian\, designs are popular in the early phase setting and some examples of adaptive designs will be discussed. \nNo registration is required. \nClick here to join the session.

SUMMARY:Data-Driven Decisions: The Case for Randomised Policy Trials. A Talk by Dr Andrew Leigh\, Assistant Treasurer in the Australian Government
DESCRIPTION:In medicine\, multiple randomised trials have found potentially promising treatments to be ineffective (or even harmful). \nRandomised trials in health save money and save lives. Yet while randomised trials have proliferated in health\, randomised trials of social programs remain relatively rare. \nDrawing on examples from different countries and policy areas\, Dr Leigh discuss the value of randomised trials for economic efficiency and improving the quality of government services. \nIn Australia\, the 2023 establishment of the Australian Centre for Evaluation provided a platform for conducting more randomised trials across Government. \nInternational collaboration on evidence creation and evidence sharing offers an opportunity to encourage best practice evaluation and entrench a cycle of continuous improvement within governments. \nFor more information including registration details please go to the Nuffield Department of Population Health events page: Events — Nuffield Department of Population Health (ox.ac.uk)
