DESCRIPTION:The NIHR Mental Health Translational Research Collaboration Mission is funding Masters courses for 11 mental health professionals to undertake training in clinical research delivery. \nThe MSc Clinical Research Delivery courses offer professional practitioners or those working in research support roles the chance to study the theory\, practice and key issues underpinning clinical research delivery in practical mental health settings. \nThe courses options\, which are both offered as online\, distance learning\, part-time courses\, are delivered by the University of Exeter and King’s College London. \nDuring the webinar attendees will hear from the programme directors talking about the course\, core modules and selection process. Each seminar is 20 minutes long followed by 10 minutes of Q&A\, and will be held via Microsoft Teams. \nMultilevel modelling in clinical trials \nDr Daphne Kounali\, OCTRU Lead Statistician \nWednesday 9th April 2025\, 1:00-1:30pm \nA multilevel model is a statistical tool used to analyze data with a complex dependence structure\, such as when patients are nested within hospitals or when there are multiple levels of treatment providers and geographic locations. In this seminar\, I will define the different types of structures in clinical trials and discuss various applications of multilevel models\, including incorporating repeated measurements\, accounting for drop-out\, and addressing measurement error. I will demonstrate how realistic assumptions and focusing on structure can help understand contextual effects and heterogeneity in outcomes\, providing more precise estimates of treatment effects and predictions. \nNo registration is required. \nClick here to join the session.

SUMMARY:FREE Public Talk: Predicting heart attacks years before they happen
DESCRIPTION:Imagine if you could find out if you were likely to have a heart attack in ten years’ time. \n  \nSome 2.3 million people in the UK are living with coronary heart disease. Computed tomography (CT) heart scans are the recommended test for people with cardiac chest pain. These images assess narrowing and obstruction in the heart and blood vessels. But they fail to pick up half of the heart attacks that occur. \nResearch has shown that changes in the fatty tissue and increased inflammation around coronary vessels is linked to a higher risk of fatal heart attacks. \nIn this talk\, Clinical Research Fellow Kenneth Chan will explain how a new device developed in Oxford combines the CT scan with artificial intelligence to detect these biological processes –invisible to the human eye – that precede the narrowing of the arteries and cause heart attacks. \nThis CaRi-Heart device\, now successfully trialled in NHS hospitals\, promises to be a game-changer in our efforts to prevent cardiovascular disease. \nFREE entry\, no booking required. DESCRIPTION:Course Description: \n\nBeing able to provide a full\, complete and accurate IRAS submission should help to make your approval process run much more smoothly\, but many people struggle with some aspects of IRAS. This half day course is designed to supplement the existing IRAS and HRA guidance by working through the standard and combined review IRAS systems as well as the amendments section in a live environment.  We will concentrate on those questions and functions that many applicants struggle with\, such as: \nHow to complete the project filter?\nWhat is the most effective way to navigate the system?\nHow do I transfer the project to other collaborators?\nThe course will give you the opportunity to ask questions about both the system and the submission process and understand the best way to ensure your application fully reflects the detail of your research. \nCourse Structure \nThe course will work through the different parts of the IRAS system: \n\n\nStandard IRAS\nIRAS for Amendments\nCombined Review IRAS\n\nWe will look at how each one is used and how to complete and submit an application.
