Every year, the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) awards prizes of €2,000 (approx. £1,677) to five mental health professionals who have published the best scientific papers relating to psychiatry or research in psychiatry.
The EPA is the main association representing psychiatry in Europe. The EPA’s activities address the interests of psychiatrists in academia, research and practice throughout all stages of career development.
We are pleased to announce that two OH BRC colleagues are the recipients of the prize.

Dr Angharad de Cates, Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and Academic Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead at OH BRC, received the award for her paper “Association between a selective 5-HT4 receptor agonist and incidence of major depressive disorder”, published in The British Journal of Psychiatry.
Dr de Cates said: “It’s a great privilege to receive this prize from the EPA for our paper. It was an honour to work alongside some outstanding BRC co-authors from both the Depression Therapeutics and Molecular Targets themes, as well as our London and Oxford Gastroenterology collaborators, all of whom were crucial for its success.

Dr Riccardo de Giorgi, Clinical Lecturer in the University of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry and OH BRC researcher was awarded the prize for his paper “12-month neurological and psychiatric outcomes of semaglutide use for type 2 diabetes: a propensity-score matched cohort study”, published in Lancet eClinicalMedicine.
Dr de Giorgi said: “I am honoured to receive this award from the EPA. Competition was fierce and I would like to congratulate with the other winners for their tremendous entries.
“From my side, I owe this prize to the fantastic research team in Oxford who have worked with me on this important project – with special thanks to Dr Maxime Taquet, whose support has been invaluable”.
