Complimentary facilities

The facilities on the Warneford Hospital site are complimented by leading neuroimaging facilities and expertise close at hand, including:

► Oxford Acute Vascular Imaging Centre (AVIC)

AVIC at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital is a facility dedicated to clinical research in acute coronary syndromes (heart attack and unstable angina) and stroke and TIA. Its facilities below are uniquely conjoined:

  • 3T MRI scanner
  • Interventional angiography suite

Find out more: http://www.avic.ox.ac.uk/home

► Oxford Centre for Functional MRI of the Brain (FMRIB) / Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging

FMRIB / Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging is based within the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences and sited at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital. FMRIB is a multi-disciplinary neuroimaging research facility comprising:

  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
  • Non-invasive brain stimulation

Collaborators and platforms

Our work is supported by these pioneering and innovative research groups and networks:

► The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC)

SGC is a large public-private partnership (six academic institutions, five public bodies/charities and eight pharma companies) that supports the discovery of new medicines using open science.  Based on the Old Road Campus, a five minute walk from the NIHR Oxford Health BRC’s Warneford site, it is creating a new drug discovery ecosystem, supporting mental health treatments.

► MRC Dementias Platform UK (DPUK)

DPUK was established to open up and accelerate progress in dementias research. The DPUK is directed from Oxford by Professor John Gallacher and DPUK resources will be shared with the NIHR Oxford Health BRC.

  • DPUK’s aims are early detection, improved treatment and ultimately, prevention, of dementias.
  • It brings together data from 2,000,000 study participants from more than 30 cohorts.
  • Six UK and international companies (Araclon, Medimmune, GSK, Ixico, Janssen and SomaLogic) have signed an agreement which will allow shared access to data.
  • DPUK enables rapid identification of promising targets.
  • Oxford provides leadership for the stem cells network and the informatics network.
  • DPUK links industry partners to a UK-wide network of academic excellence.

► Alzheimer’s Research UK Drug Discovery Institute Oxford (ARUK DDI Oxford)

ARUK DDI Oxford is a £10 million investment that combines deep disease knowledge and biological expertise with high quality, innovative drug discovery technologies to deliver new therapies for dementia. The DDI is based in the Target Discovery Institute, Nuffield Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford, Old Road Campus.

► Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)

IAPT, led by Professor David Clarke at the University of Oxford, has been rolled out across the NHS to ensure that patients access help more quickly and easily for common mental health problems. We will be building on this in one of our core themes: ‘Precision psychological treatments‘.

Find out more about IAPT: https://www.england.nhs.uk/mental-health/adults/iapt/

Watch this video about IAPT: https://youtu.be/KwZfee2erkw

► NIHR Oxford University Hospitals Biomedical Research Centre (OUH BRC)

We will work closely with our colleagues at the OUH BRC, particularly with their core themes:

  • Stroke & Vascular Dementia
  • Neurological Conditions
  • Bioengineering

And their cross-cutting themes:

  • Partnerships for Health and Wealth
  • Imaging and Clinical Informatics
  • Big Data

Find out more: https://oxfordbrc.nihr.ac.uk/

► National Biomedical Research Centres

We will work closely with other mental health and dementia themes in national BRCs. Together we will transform the strategic outlook for mental health research in the UK. We aim to

  • integrate systems for patient access to research.
  • create state-of-the-art infrastructure for experimental medicine in mental health.
  • optimise the training and career development opportunities available to future leaders of therapeutic progress.

► Oxford Academic Health Science Centre (Oxford AHSC)

Oxford AHSC coordinates clinical and academic excellence within Oxford University, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Find out more: http://www.oxfordahsc.org.uk/

► Oxford Academic Health Science Network (Oxford AHSN)

Oxford AHSN consolidates interactions between Oxford universities, hospitals and industry networks to create new therapeutics, diagnostics, devices, companies and jobs.

► NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Research and Care Oxford (NIHR CLAHRC Oxford)

NIHR CLAHRC Oxford, hosted by Oxford Health NHS FT 2014-2019, has a strong emphasis on mental health and primary care. The CLAHRC has been especially effective in establishing cross infrastructure working. This joint working ensures pull through from discovery science to implementation.
Find out more: https://www.clahrc-oxford.nihr.ac.uk/

► NIHR Clinical Research Network: Thames Valley and South Midlands (NIHR CRN)

NIHR CRN is the clinical research delivery arm of the NHS. The NIHR CRN: Thames Valley and South Midlands is hosted by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust, and its Director, Belinda Lennox, is based in the University of Oxford’s Department of Psychiatry.
