Improving mental health and wellbeing with creative arts

Here, in the first webinar of the series, we will be hearing from researchers on: Improving mental health and wellbeing with creative arts.

Three short 10-minute talks explore research on the impact of the arts on the mental health and wellbeing of Black young people, asylum seekers & refugees, new mothers, stroke survivors and people with Parkinson’s.

Chair: This webinar is chaired by Prof Simon Gilbody, Co-Lead of the NIHR ARC Yorkshire and Humber Mental Health theme, Professor of Psychological Medicine and Health Services Research at the University of York and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist at Tees and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust.

Speakers:

  • NIHR ARC Oxford and Thames Valley’s Dr Briana Applewhite on how creative arts therapies like music, dance, art and drama, can help improve the mental wellbeing of Black young people in the UK.
  • NIHR ARC West’s Dr Christalla Pithara-McKeown on supporting the mental health of adult asylum seekers and refugees through a community music group.
  • NIHR ARC South London’s Dr Tony Woods & Prof Ioannis Bakolis on the world’s largest hybrid study on the impact of the arts on mental health embedded into a national healthcare system.
