The ‘big shift’ from hospitals to communities

The Cambridge Centre for Health Services Research

The Cambridge Centre for Health Services Research (CCHSR) is delighted to host Professor Martin Knapp who will present at its Annual Lecture, taking place at Thursday 6th November 2025, 12:30-13:30 via Zoom.

Register here.

Shifting care from hospital to community settings is at the heart of the NHS 10-Year Health Plan for England and wider government policy. This is not a new ambition: ‘care in the community’ was heavily promoted from at least the 1960s for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities. What are the chances of success today?

This year’s lecture will be delivered by Professor Martin Knapp, who will draw on decades of experience and evidence from four key clinical areas: dementia, mental health, respiratory and cardiometabolic conditions. Martin Knapp is a Professor of Health and Social Care Policy, and Professorial Research Fellow (CPEC), at the Department of Health Policy at the London School of Economics. He will explore the innovations, opportunities, and challenges facing the NHS in achieving this ambitious transformation.

The Annual Lecture will be hosted by Jon Sussex, Chief Economist at RAND Europe and Co-Director of CCHSR, and RAND Professor Stephen Morris at the University of Cambridge and Co-Director of CCHSR.

This event will be held online and recorded, to be published on YouTube. This lecture is open to policy professionals, media, researchers, practitioners and members of the public.

We look forward to welcoming you to what promises to be a compelling discussion.
