A prescription treatment for insomnia developed by Big Health has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval this week.
Big Health joint co-founder University of Oxford’s Prof Colin Espie who leads our BRC Better Sleep Theme, together with Co-founder Peter Hames have developed a prescription treatment for insomnia called Sleepio, an app available on Android and iOS devices providing tailored treatment at any time.
The development of this NICE recommended treatment delivers a specialized type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for those suffering with insomnia and is being used by leading health care providers globally including the NHS.
The “anytime, anywhere “ CBT based treatment is free on the NHS in Scotland and parts of England. Through six weekly 10-minute sessions, patients will learn different techniques to help fall asleep faster, spend less time awake at night, and function better the next day.
Professor Colin Espie told us: “Sleepio delivers CBT for insomnia in a fully automated way, making it very accessible. Crucially, Sleepio has been rigorously tested in 14 Randomised Trials, so it’s not simply an app, but recognised as an effective treatment for chronic insomnia. The FDA clearance paves the way for patients in the US to be offered help consistent with clinical guidelines, which are that CBT (not medication) is the recommended first line treatment for insomnia”.
You can hear patient feedback on Sleepio and its benefits here.
