The NIHR Senior Investigator Award is one of the highest honours in UK health and social care research, recognising researchers who combine outstanding applied research with exceptional leadership and influence.
Awarded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), it celebrates national and international leaders who help shape the future of health and social care research, act as ambassadors for NIHR, and support the next generation of researchers, reflecting sustained impact, collaboration and a strong commitment to building research capacity across disciplines and communities.
Each year, a highly competitive selection process identifies a new cohort of Senior Investigators, appointed for a four‑year term. Those awarded join a UK‑wide community of senior research leaders who influence national research priorities, contribute to NIHR strategy, and champion inclusive, impactful research that delivers patient benefit.

We are delighted to congratulate OH BRC Director Professor Rachel Upthegrove MBE who has been named as NIHR Senior Investigator for 2026. This recognition reflects Professor Upthegrove’s exceptional leadership, sustained research excellence, and significant contributions to advancing mental health research and improving outcomes for patients and communities.
Their appointments mark a major professional achievement and underline the strength of research leadership across Oxford and the wider NIHR.
Professor Rachel Upthegrove said:
“Being named an NIHR Senior Investigator is an honour. It recognises not only individual research, but the collective effort of collaborators, patients and communities who make impactful research possible.”
Congratulations to Professor Upthegrove on this outstanding and well‑deserved achievement.
