BReal (“Building stress resilience in early adolescents’ lives”) is a public engagement collaboration between NDCN, Psychiatry, and Experimental Psychology departments at the University of Oxford (hosted by the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging).
BReal focuses on developing evidence-based resources for schools to use to improve young people’s resilience, with the aim of learning skills to be able to cope with everyday challenges.
Led by Dr Jacinta O’Shea and funded by a £72k Wellcome Enriching Engagement grant 2020-2024, the project is developing evidence-based stress resilience resources for year 7-9 PSHE classes.
Working with animation company Science Animated, from February – October 2023 the BReal team developed a series of three videos outlining key concepts from the BReal lesson materials.
Members of the NEUROSEC Young People’s Advisory Group were closely involved in the process, advising on script and storyboard drafts. The videos are now available free online as standalone resources: Training your brain to cope with stress, Learning from mistakes, and Building stress resilience.
