New Oxford Health Associate R&D Director

11th April 2017

Professor Cipriani is a senior clinical researcher at the Department of Psychiatry at Oxford University, and honorary consultant psychiatrist at the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. The NIHR Oxford BRC is a partnership between Oxford University and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Professor Cipriani’s field of expertise in research is evidence synthesis and clinical trials, with a special focus on the evaluation of treatments for conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Before moving to Oxford three years ago, he worked for ten years at the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health and Service Evaluation, which is based at the University of Verona in Italy.

He also collaborates with the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and the European Medicines Agency in London.

He is currently  working on a new project aimed at developing and validating a computer-based clinical decision tool to help guide clinicians, patients and carers as they decide on the right treatment for a person. The hope is that this tool will help improve clinical outcome, and ultimately reduce costs.

Professor Cipriani is also the Editor-in-Chief of Evidence Based Mental Health, which works to engage  psychiatrists and psychologists – particularly younger professionals – in the challenge of basing their work on evidence, and implementing research findings into real-world clinical settings.

Professor John Geddes, Head of R&D at Oxford Health, said: “It is great to have Andrea on the team. He’s a world class academic, a committed and innovative clinician, a terrific communicator (and a great musician!).

He will have a key role in delivering our vision of becoming a global centre of clinical and research excellence. We’re really looking forward to working with him!”

Professor Cipriani said: “It is a privilege for me to accept this new role in such a stimulating environment.

While in Italy, I worked closely with other consultants, nurses, mental health professionals and research assistants in both research and clinical projects. So this fantastic opportunity is a natural next step for me.”

Oxford is a very special place, and I am looking forward to contributing towards exciting research opportunities working with my colleagues across organisations to promote clinical research and translate discoveries into treatments for the benefit of patients”
