Researchers from our BRC Data Science Theme have contributed to an article on the use of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) to facilitate personalised treatments for psychiatric conditions.
Clinical prediction models can be used to estimate the health risks of individuals, which enables health care professionals to treat mental health patients with targeted care.
EHRs, which contain a patient’s personal health information, can be used to help develop and validate the efficacy of these clinical prediction models.
The article published recently in Biological Psychiatry, explores how EHR data can be used in these models to predict the risk of psychosis onset, psychotic relapse, death from heart conditions and suicide and create targeted treatments.
The findings suggest that prediction models would be useful in assisting health care professionals to make more informed decisions when treating patients.
The article also considers whether including additional information such as results of research studies, could improve the functionality of the prediction models.
